Comprising four bricks with raised designs: scrolling vegetation; two monograms, one a merchant's mark, in roundels divided by an object with tiered base and billeted border; male and female facing busts within dot-dash border; worn crowned shield issuing flowering vegetation. 6.4 kg total, 13-14 cm

These glazed stove or floor tiles are similar to the ones of the great hall and the Tudor kitchens at Hampton Court Palace, made of ceramic, with a glaze to make it hard-wearing and washable. Not just the furnishings, but the palaces themselves were multi-coloured, with brick walls painted red, and exposed timbers in yellow, red, green and white

From a collection acquired on the UK art market from various auction houses and collections mostly before 2000. From an important Cambridgeshire estate; thence by descent.

With a flat-section hoop widening at the shoulders, raised bezel set with a green glass cabochon. 5.94 grams, 28.53 mm overall, 19.74 mm internal diameter (approximate size British T 1/2, USA 9 3/4, Europe 21.89, Japan 21)



Found during a rally at Bridgewater, Somerset, UK, in 1993, and recorded with the museum services on site. From the collection of a Caerphilly, UK, gentleman formed since 1990.
