Merovingian Gold and Garnet Shield Fitting
6TH-7TH CENTURY AD
1 3/4" (21.32 grams, 43mm).
A substantial gold mount possibly from a shield, with beaded wire rim, attachment pins, central rosette of raised cells with meerschaum, turquoise and garnet inlay.
Provenance
Acquired in London 1999; formerly in the collection of Mr L. Grenacs, Belgium, formed in 1975.
