Medieval 'Thames' Bronze Buckle with Plate
CIRCA 14TH-15TH CENTURY A.D.
2 3/8 in. (20.9 grams, 62 mm).
With gently tapering plate, broad loop and short tongue with rectangular guard; four attachment rivets to the plate, central rivet with incised saltire. [No Reserve]

Found on the Thames foreshore, London, UK, circa mid 1980s.

Acquired 1960s-1990s. Late Alison Barker collection, a retired London barrister.
Knife handles were made of wood, horn, bone or metal. Wood, a cheap, readily available and easily worked material, was by far the most common and most of the species used are both hard and flexible.
