Medieval Pope Clement III Lead Papal Bulla

1187-1191 A.D.

1 1/2 in. (34 grams, 37 mm).

The obverse depicting the busts of St Peter and St Paul each within an inverted pear-shaped compartment defined by pellets; cross pattee supported on a staff between the busts and at the top of the bulla in the centre remains of the letters 'SPASPE', abbreviations for St Paul and St Peter; reverse inscribed over three lines 'CLE/MENS/PP.III.', with an omega above the letters 'PP'; both obverse and reverse faces with a pelletted perimeter. [No Reserve]

Found Suffolk, UK, circa 2000.

Footnotes

Pope Clement III played a significant role in mediating disputes and organizing the Third Crusade. He was known for settling the conflict between the Papacy and the city of Rome, allowing the Papacy to return after a six-year exile.
