Medieval Marble Head of a Demonic Lion
SPAIN, 11TH-13TH CENTURY A.D.
3 3/4 in. (610 grams, 94 mm).
Carved in the round with low pricked ears and hatched mane to the rear of the head, broad nose developing between domed lentoid eyes, broad upper lip, open mouth displaying teeth; repaired.

The image represents the Agnus Dei, a visual representation of Jesus as a lamb, which is more normally shown with a flag. The intensive use of punched annulets is often found on harness pendants of 12th-century date. -

The 'Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem' was an order of knighthood under the protection of the Pope, formed around 1099 AD by Duke Godfrey of Bouillon, the leader of the First Crusade. It was established for the protection of pilgrims travelling to the Holy Land and was recognised by a Papal Bull in about 1113 AD. -
