Medieval Lead Shield-Shaped Weight with Rampant Lion of Simon de Montfort

CIRCA 13TH-15TH CENTURY A.D.

1 7/8 in. (117 grams, 49.4 mm).

Thick weight with ropework border and raised escutcheon, reserved lion rampant with fourché tail, rectangular mounting-slot; believed to be the arms of Simon de Montfort, killed at the Battle of Evesham in 1265. [No Reserve]

'Lord, protect thy people...) in dense blackletter bookhand with liquid gold versals on blue and with red 'Oro' (I pray) responses; both mounted in a glazed wooden frame with cream-coloured card reveal. 447 grams total, 19.5 x 14.3 cm each
