Medieval Knight's Enamelled Bronze 'Borchoven Family' Heraldic Horse Harness Pendant

14TH-15TH CENTURY A.D.

1 1/2 in. (6.49 grams, 37.85 mm).

On a quatrefoil-shaped shield with pierced loop at the apex, remains of red enamel heater-shaped shield, the upper left quarter with the remains of red enamel, along with three red mascles within the remaining three quarters; possibly descendants of Van den Borchoven, Brab. V.Ad. [No Reserve]

    The arms are divided per pale with one half showing as concentric chevrons, associated with the Tyrrell family who held lands in Essex in the 12th century and after. Sir John Tyrrell (c.1382 - 2 April 1437) of Herongate, Essex, was an English landowner, lawyer, administrator, and politician who was chosen three times as Speaker of the House of Commons.

    Johannes Grüninger (1455-1533) was a prolific German printer active from 1482 to 1533 who printed up to 80 books a year in Latin and in German, as well as wall-maps. His bible was issued in two volumes, which allowed it be produced on smaller pages than for most standard editions.
