Medieval Knight's Bronze 'Pembroke Earls of Valence' Heraldic Horse Harness Pendant

13TH-14TH CENTURY A.D.

1 1/2 in. (9.15 grams, 39 mm).

Heater-shaped with pierced lug above, enamel-filled heraldic design to obverse; variant of the arms of Valence blazoned 'barruly or and azure an orle of martlets gules'. [No Reserve]

Found Nutley, Hampshire, UK.

Accompanied by a copy of an article on the pendant titled A Frenchman at the English Court by I.H. Szymansk.
This lot is accompanied by an illustrated lot declaration signed by the Head of the Antiquities Department, Dr Raffaele D'Amato.

Footnotes

The Valence arms feature horizontal blue and white stripes, while the present mount is reconstructed with blue and yellow.

    The obverse depicting the busts of St Peter and St Paul each within an inverted pear-shaped compartment defined by pellets; cross pattee supported on a staff between the busts and at the top of the bulla in the centre letters 'SPASPE', abbreviations for St Paul and St Peter; reverse inscribed over three lines 'GRE/GORIVS./PP. VIIII', with an omega above the letters 'PP'; both obverse and reverse faces with a pelletted perimeter. 42.5 grams, 40 mm
