Medieval Knight's Bronze Heraldic Horse Harness Mount

1300-1400 A.D.

3/4 in. (5.74 grams, 21 mm).

Rectangular in form with a circular hole in its top right corner, decorated with a heater shield containing a two-strand cross bottony terminals, set within a red enamel field; diagonal hatching in the two outer angles. [No Reserve]

Found Crowmarsh, South Oxfordshire, UK.

Accompanied by a copy of the British Museum's Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) report no.SUR-CCD479.

    The 'Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem' was an order of knighthood under the protection of the Pope, formed around 1099 AD by Duke Godfrey of Bouillon, the leader of the First Crusade. It was established for the protection of pilgrims travelling to the Holy Land and was recognised by a Papal Bull in about 1113 AD.
