Medieval Knife with Bronze Pommel and Veiled Figure
CIRCA 1500 A.D.
7 3/4 in. (33.3 grams, 19.7 cm long).
A scale tanged knife with iron blade and single cutting edge, wooden scales, bronze pommel incised with a richly-clothed veiled bust to one face and an enigmatic motif to the other; possibly maker's stamp to one face of blade.

An iron spur and mount comprising: an ellipsoid plate of curved profile with arm to the upper edge recurved to extend parallel to the plate, terminating in a threaded ring with adjustable screw; the arm extending in an arc to a bifurcated end with free-running five-pointed rowel. 19.3 grams, 44 mm wide

This enigmatic inscription has been found on other similar badges, but is yet to be satisfactorily understood. It is possibly associated with the cult of Edward the Confessor or representing the head of John the Baptist. -
