Medieval Knife with Bronze Pommel and Veiled Figure

CIRCA 1500 A.D.

5 1/2 in. (16.9 grams, 14 cm long).

A scale tanged knife with iron blade and single cutting edge, wooden scales, bronze pommel incised with a veiled figure facing left to both faces, with stylised detailing to their garments.

Provenance

Acquired 1960s-1990s.

    This enigmatic inscription has been found on other similar badges, but is yet to be satisfactorily understood. It is possibly associated with the cult of Edward the Confessor or representing the head of John the Baptist.
