Medieval Iron Knife with Bronze Pommel
CIRCA 1500 A.D.
8 in. (49 grams, 20.2 cm).
Comprising a single cutting edge, scale tang and bifacial pommel with incised motifs.

Acquired 1960s-1990s.

Footnotes
The medieval knives could have the tang attached in two ways depending on the the form of the tang. Whittle-tang knives have a tapered tang which is inserted into or through the handle. Scale-tang knives have wider and flatter tangs onto which the plates comprising the handle are attached with metal rivets.

On a quatrefoil shield with pierced lug above, two lions passant gardant facing left, originally gilded, the field once containing red enamel. 6.93 grams, 33 mm
Found Norfolk, UK, circa 1990s.
The Royal Arms of England feature three lions passant gardant from the late 12th century, but there is a suspicion that an earlier version comprised only two such beasts, and that the third was added when Henry II married Eleanor Duchess of Aquitaine in 1152.
