Medieval Iron Knife with Bronze Pommel

Comprising a single cutting edge, scale tang and bifacial pommel with incised motifs.

Footnotes
The medieval knives could have the tang attached in two ways depending on the the form of the tang. Whittle-tang knives have a tapered tang which is inserted into or through the handle. Scale-tang knives have wider and flatter tangs onto which the plates comprising the handle are attached with metal rivets.

Ex M.Cummings, UK, 1990s.
Johannes Grüninger (1455-1533) was a prolific German printer active from 1482 to 1533 who printed up to 80 books a year in Latin and in German, as well as wall-maps. His bible was issued in two volumes, which allowed it be produced on smaller pages than for most standard editions. -
Medieval Iron Rowel Spur Collection

Comprising examples of various types, including some retaining the rowel. 217 grams total, 11.5-14.8 cm
Acquired 1990s-early 2000s. East Anglian private collection.
The deep curve of the shoulders, the lack of protrusion above the base of the rowel holder, the short rowel holder and the small diameter rowel are characteristics that point to dating some of this specimens in the 13th century. Kirpichnikov puts these spurs in type V (first half of the 13th-14th century) after a spur depicted on an English tombstone dating to the beginning of the 14th century.
