Footnotes
A rowel spur in this group, undecorated and with deeply curved side arms suggest a 13th-14th century dating. Spurs were not just worn when riding, but more generally as a mark of status and could also be highly decorated.

Medieval Iron Bell Group

Comprising bells of various shapes and sizes, most retaining their suspension loop and clapper and producing a range of sounds. 1 kg total, 5-13 cm
Acquired 1990s-early 2000s. East Anglian private collection.
Like the bell found in Oxfordshire, these bells are quadrangular with sloping sides to a narrow rounded top, furnished of a hanging ring. While these bells are similar in overall shape to Roman and Middle Saxon examples, a post medieval date is perhaps more likely. -

Acquired on the UK market, 1990s. Property of a retired academic.
The heraldry references the medieval royal arms of England prior to 1340, when the arms of France were added to those of England. It should, however, be noted that the use of these former arms continued in use on small portable items for some period of time after 1340.
