(Silver and quartz, 3.87 grams, 22.9 mm.).
Circa 13th century AD. A silver seal matrix of discoid form enclosing a re-used Roman intaglio; the matrix bearing the text in Lombardic script X IHESUS : CRISTUS : AVEMAR; the intaglio a quartz gemstone depicting a winged Victory with cross-headed staff.
PROVENANCE:
Found in Middleton, Warwickshire, England and disclaimed under the Treasure Act 1996; full documentation from the British Museum included.
FOOTNOTES:
The intaglio possibly curated and re-used due to association with the cross-bearing winged angels of mediaeval Christian tradition.
