Medieval Handled Jug

13TH-16TH CENTURY A.D.

6 1/2 in. (741 grams, 16.5 cm high).

A coarse ceramic jug with rounded body, shallow shoulder, narrow mouth pinched to form a pouring lip, thick strap handle to the rear with thumb-pad above, incised circumferential lines to the shoulder with lines of stamped pellet ornament. [No Reserve]

    Found on the Thames foreshore, London, UK. Acquired on the UK antiques market between 1974-1985. Albert Ward collection, Essex, UK.

    St Blaise is believed to have been a bishop located somewhere in Asia Minor who was martyred in the early 4th century by beheading, following a period of torture with iron combs which later became his emblem. Canterbury, where his shrine stood behind the high altar and near to that of Saint Thomas Becket, claimed to have relics directly associated with Blaise, and miracles attributed to the saint continued to attract pilgrims into the 15th century.

    Found near Snargate, Kent, UK. Property of a Kent gentleman. Accompanied by a copy of the British Museum's Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) report no.KENT-56AC78, dating it to c.1280-1350 A.D.

    The triple boar's head arms is associated with several members of the Swinburne (sometimes Swynbourne) family in the late 13th to early 14th century period.
