Medieval Gold Ring with Purple Gemstone
12TH-14TH CENTURY AD
1" (9.53 grams, 28 mm overall, 18.68 mm internal diameter (approximate size British Q 1/2, USA 8 1/2, Europe 18.62, Japan 18)).
A substantial D-section hoop cast in the form of intertwined snakes, the four heads supporting a discoid bezel set with a blue-purple irregular gemstone, drilled lengthwise for original use as a bead.
Provenance
Found Backwell, North Somerset, UK, in 2012. Disclaimed under the Treasure Act, reference 2012T690 and supplied with appropriate documentation, including the official Treasure Valuation in the sum of £4,000-£6,000 and the report of the BM XRF analysis (94-96% gold, 2-4% silver and copper).
