Medieval Gilt Bronze Lozenge-Shaped Ring Brooch with Inscription Verso
CIRCA 14TH-15TH CENTURY A.D.
3/4 in. (2.76 grams, 21.5 mm).
With quatrefoil at the upper and lower angles, pelletted detailing, sword-shaped pin; uncertain legend to reverse 'mAN + AVE' perhaps an attempt at the common AVE MARIA. [No Reserve]

The arms are divided per pale with one half showing as concentric chevrons, associated with the Tyrrell family who held lands in Essex in the 12th century and after. Sir John Tyrrell (c.1382 - 2 April 1437) of Herongate, Essex, was an English landowner, lawyer, administrator, and politician who was chosen three times as Speaker of the House of Commons.
