Medieval Gilt Bronze Lion Finial

14TH-15TH CENTURY A.D.

1 1/4 in. (25.1 grams, 32 mm high).

Modelled in the half-round standing with head left on a plinth base, rectangular fixing socket to underside.

Provenance

‘The Ancient Menagerie Collection’ formerly the property of a Cambridgeshire lady, collected since the 1990s and acquired from auctions and dealers throughout Europe and the USA, now ex London collection.

    This portion of the Book of Judges tells of Samson slaying a thousand Philistines with the 'jawbone of an ass' together with the betrayal by Delilah, his loss of strength and capture when his hair was cut and and his eventual death by pulling down the pillars.
