Medieval Gilded Bronze Head of Christ
1200-1500 A.D.
3/4 in. (17.5 grams, 21 mm).
Modelled in the round with semi-naturalistic face and hair detailing and trace remains of gilding; once belonging to a complete figure of Christ. [No Reserve]

The copper-alloy pendant appears to be cross-shaped with the top arm forming the suspension loop. It is therefore possible to consider the pendant to be T-shaped, in the form of the Greek letter Tau. These Tau crosses often acted as miniature reliquaries which are thought to have contained a herbal compound that was used to treat the symptoms of St Anthony's fire. -

Openwork winged beast to the centre, its tails curling beneath the body creating the foliate tendrils on which it perches, broad outer roundel decorated with geometric plants alternating with lozenges, extensive remains of blue champlevé enamelling; engraved and chiselled; four attachment holes. 61 grams, 89 mm wide
