Sold for (Inc. bp): £2,185

MEDIEVAL COUNT GOFFRIDI'S SECRET SEAL MATRIX
(Bronze, 13.30 grams, 29.75 mm diameter.).

Circa 1365 AD, Germany. A bronze disc seal matrix with attached spine handle and suspension at rear and bearing the design of a crowned helm and arms with floral sprays in the field; the arms of three eagles displayed on a field of quatrefoils, the crest of five sprays of leaves and bearing the legend SECRET GOFFRIDI COMITIS D' LININGE in Roman lettering.

PROVENANCE:
Private collection, Suffolk, UK; acquired in the 1990's.

FOOTNOTES:
The personal seal of a Count. The place name on this seal as COMITIS D' LININGE could well refer to a County in Germany and, stylistically, a Germanic origin is quite possible. The name Godfrey/Gottfried/Geoffrey is commonly encountered in medieval times.
