Medieval Carved Oak Boss with the Mask of a Man and Foliage
CIRCA 1475 A.D.
9 5/8 in. (2.3 kg, 24.5 cm).
Carved in the half-round as a tonsured male face centred in an octofoil with mounting sockets and lateral piercings. [No Reserve]

Similar rings were found in the aristocratic cemetery of Stanicenje, in Serbia. These graves often contained traces of gold embroidered textile fabrics associated with hollow metal ball buttons, earrings and rings. Such rings were used by pre-Ottoman Balkan nobles as indicators of rank, particularly in the Serbian and Bulgarian empires. -

The crucifix between the antlers shows that this is the stag of St. Hubert or St. Eustace, both of whom witnessed the miraculous apparition of Christ on the Cross between the antlers of a stag.
