Medieval Bronze Pocket Sundial with Seal of the Arms of France and T S
15TH-16TH CENTURY A.D.
1 5/8 in. (14.4 grams, 40 mm).
The flat-section hoop with raised circular seal bezel bearing engraved three fleur de lis flanked by initials T-S, hoop with openwork bar to one side, together with engraved gradation lines and letters representative of the months of the year above and below, and the hours marked on hoop interior.

Acquired early 1990s.
From an East Anglian private collection.

Cf. The British Museum's Portable Antiquities Scheme, record id. SWYOR-9104DD, for similar. The record comments that no other examples recorded with PAS combine a sundial with a seal.

There were four essential ways to carry the small knifes in late Middle Ages: a) with the scabbard tucked diagonally behind belt, without suspension loop; b) without scabbard, simply thrust through the purse of the belt; c) with the scabbard tied horizontally at waist with suspension holes in the widened handle flap; d) suspended vertically from thong looped over the belt, in the scabbard.
