Medieval Bronze Openwork Sword Pommel

(Bronze with enamel, 45 grams, 36 mm.).

Circa 13th century AD. A cast bronze sword pommel of discoid form with inlaid enamel detail: to one flat face a fleur-de-lys with vinescroll extensions, and to the other a heater shield charged with a bend, with flanking scrolled panels; to each shoulder of the curved faces a heater shield with hatched detail; a rectangular socket to the centre of the lower face to accept the tang.

Ex Barker collection, formed in the 1970's.
