Medieval Bronze Beehive Thimble Collection

CIRCA 15TH-16TH CENTURY A.D.

7/8 - 1 in. (45 grams total, 22-27 mm).

Comprising one thimble accompanied by a Portable Antiquities Scheme record, the thimble with a spiral of dimples extending from the base to the crown, a narrow notch to the rim; accompanied by three similar thimbles of slightly different sizes. [4, No Reserve]

Accompanied by a copy of the British Museum's Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) report no.BERK-AC7B51.

    Acquired 1990s-early 2000s. East Anglian private collection.

    Bowls similar to the specimen in this group, dated to of the first half of the 17th century, were present in very small numbers in the Oxford excavations of late Medieval and Post Medieval levels. Locally manufactured bowls of the second half of the 17th century were found in large numbers from the various layers, made up of Oxford Type B, with their distinctive angular profiles, dated circa 1650-1690.
