Modelled standing and holding a bulbous spouted container in his extended hands, stylised head with projecting ears and open mouth; repaired.
ProvenancePrivate collection of Dr Alvin M. Soffe (c.1922-1995) and Elizabeth Ann Soffe, Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, acquired circa 1960s-1970s, thence by descent.

Renaissance Gold and Enamelled Crucifix Pendant

The limp body of Christ hanging from the cross, wearing an enamelled loincloth, the bones of Adam at his feet; above his head a plaque mocking the saviour, hung by Pilate with the initials ‘INRI’, an abbreviation of the Latin ‘Iēsus Nazarēnus, Rēx Iūdaeōrum’, translating as 'Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews’; carefully rendered three-dimensional cross imitating the grain, knots and stumps of the wood, a baroque pearl suspended from both arms and the base of the cross. 8.56 grams, 75 mm

Gerry Mulligan was an important 20th century composer, arranger, saxophonist and conductor, who played a leading role in the development of jazz and contemporary music. The poster advertises a serialised commentary on the contemporary music scene which appeared in 'Melody Maker'. The footnote reference is to the Odhams publishing venture which folded in 1968. -
Renaissance Agate Cameo of Two Owls in Gold Ring

Comprising a D-section hoop expanding towards the open-backed setting set with a large brown agate intaglio modelled as two conjoined standing owls, the one at the front facing, and the other looking to the right, intricate feather and facial details, the cameo with a loss on the right-hand side, with the ring incorporating a fine gold repair. 12.74 grams, 24.90 mm overall, 17.00 mm internal diameter (approximate size British M 1/2, USA 6 1/4, Europe 13.09, Japan 12)

Even in Italian Renaissance, the owl, ancient symbol of the goddess Athena, symbolises wisdom. The owl was also a symbol of the night time and death, as is so eloquently illustrated in the 17th Century painting Vanité à la chouette in The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Dijon, which depicts an owl sitting on a human skull next to an extinguished candle.
