Late Roman Terracotta Menorah Lamp

4TH-6TH CENTURY A.D.

3 3/8 in. (120 grams, 86 mm).

Hollow-formed ceramic oil lamp with two nozzles flanking a low-relief menorah with fronds and bunches of grapes in high-relief; underside with impressed wreath detail.

Provenance

Formerly in North American collection, 1990s.
From the collection of a London, UK, gentleman.

Accompanied by a thermoluminescence analysis report no.N124k39 from Oxford Authentication.
This lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by a search certificate number no.12396-225409.

    This lamp belongs to the typology of ‘rounded bodies and volute spines’, typical of 1st or early 2nd century A.D. These lamps had fairly shallow and round-walled oil-chambers with long flat-topped nozzles with splayed tips (here very shallow). The majority of these lamps are of Italic manufacture, and similar have been found in Pompeii (see lamp in Ashmolean Museum ANFORTNUM B.186).
