Large Silver Calligraphic Inlaid Bird
20TH CENTURY A.D.
13 1/4 in. (1.6 kg, 33.5 cm high).
Formed in the round standing with wings folded, stylised anatomical and feather detailing, silver inlaid flowering vines, guilloche, 'net' and other elaborate detailing, calligraphic roundel to breast and neck; tear-shaped void to head with hinge for a lid.
ProvenanceLondon collection since the 1980s.

Acquired on the UK art market. Property of a Somerset collector, UK, since at least the early 2000s.
Cufflinks and other dress fittings such as buttons featuring the hearts design were originally conceived to commemorate the marriage of king Charles II of England to Catherine of Braganza in 1662, although various designs continued as a general symbol of love and/or marriage. -
