Large Roman Green Glass Square Bottle Top
1ST-2ND CENTURY A.D.

Fragment of a shoulder with short neck and broad mouth with rolled rim; right-angled strap handle with applied trails. [No Reserve]
Provenance
From the collection of a late East Anglian teacher and antiquarian who retired to the Isle of Wight in Hampshire, UK.
He amassed a large collection of objects between the 1960s-1980s.
This lot is accompanied by an illustrated lot declaration signed by the Head of the Antiquities Department, Dr Raffaele D’Amato.

Footnotes
This item is part of a common type of storage and packing bottles used in the early Imperial centuries. The heavy glass wall provided durability, and the square shape of such bottles made it easy to ship. Use of such bottles for packaging has been confirmed by finds from Herculaneum.
