Large Medieval Personal Lead Seal Matrix of Thomas Wersgurd

12TH-13TH CENTURY A.D.

1 5/8 in. (35.2 grams, 42 mm).

Circular in plan with remains of suspension loop, the thick flan bearing a design composed of a central standing bird looking backwards and raising one wing, surrounding Latin legend '+ SIGILL ThOME DA VVERSGVRD' or, 'Seal of Thomas Wersgurd'; accompanied by an impression. [No Reserve]

Accompanied by a copy of the British Museum's Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) report no.BERK-40C486.

    This is an amatory legend, such are not uncommon on personal seals. It seems likely that the intended inscription was that found on a gold finger ring from Essex in the 18 century, i.e. 'AMI AMES AMIE AVES' [Beloved, love! You have a beloved!], also see a brooch on the PAS database under reference no.BUC-B93E93, which reads 'AMIE AMEZ A'.

    Acquired 1990s-early 2000s. East Anglian private collection.

    This kind of iron snaffle bits were commonly used in late Medieval or Renaissance period. The mouth piece was made in two linked sections, to which big rings were attached at the extremities. Reins and bridles were both fastened to the rings.
