Large Medieval Crusader Period Carved Basalt Capital

12TH-13TH CENTURY A.D.

18 1/8 in. (118.4 kg, 46 cm high).

Architectural column capital modelling curled acanthus leaves, rising from a narrow stem, curving outwards and away from each other. [No Reserve]

Acquired 1970s-1996.
Property of a North American collector.
London collection, 2016.

Whittle tang handles (like here) were more common later and fixed by pushing the pointed end of the knife tang into the handle.

    One complete purse bar with linear ornament and swivel hoop; one purse bar arm with attachment lugs and inscription to both faces, part of: 'DEFVNTIS' '[LAVS DEO]'; possibly a version of 'Laus deo pax vivis requies defunctis', or 'Praise be to God, peace to the living and rest to the dead'; a carinated fragment inscribed 'ONOR' (the N retrograde), amidst flowering tendrils, part of the common inscription 'SOLI DEO HONOR ET GLORIA' [Honour and glory be to God only], from 1 Timothy, v.17. 63 grams total, 62-98 mm
