Large Egyptian Steatite Scarab
LATE PERIOD, 664-332 B.C.
1 3/4 in. (33.76 grams, 46 mm).
With a detailed carapace, mouth, and legs; the underside decorated with a line border enclosing a large central sma motif in the upper half, followed by a neb, men, and Khepri beetle hieroglyphs, flanked by rearing cobras.
ProvenanceFrom the collection of a gentleman, acquired on the London art market in the 1990s.

This vessel's unusual triangular shape is thought to be limited to the Late Period; other comparable examples are known (e.g., Barbotin, C., Collection égyptienne: Musée Granet - Aix-en-Provence, Aix-en-Provence, 1995, p. 166, no. 97). -

Such vessels were used to hold cosmetics. The low shape and wide base prevented tipping when extracting the cosmetic with an applicator.
