Large Chinese Song Granary Jar with Dragon and Bird Lid
SONG DYNASTY, 960-1279 A.D.
27 1/2 in. (3.55 kg, 69 cm).
Piriform in shape with piecrust collar to neck and slightly splayed foot; decorated with a medial frieze of applied figures standing above a piecrust collar, a sinuous dragon with a fearsome face and ridge scales coiled around the neck, together with a snake and turtle, swirling clouds and sun or moon between them; domed conical lid with flange rim and bird finial, with suspension loops.

Modelled in the round, the animal posed standing on a rectangular base, its stocky neck arched and head held facing down, tail resting between hindlegs, with painted detailing to the head, mane and harness and wearing a saddle cloth and saddle; the rider wearing a full-length robe, arms and hands relaxed by the sides, poised to grip the horse's reins near to the saddle, facial detailing and hair tied in a top knot. 1.67 kg, 32 cm high
