Large Byzantine Gold Cross Pendant

CIRCA 8TH-10TH CENTURY A.D. AND LATER

3 1/8 in. (15.16 grams, 81 mm).

Tubular in construction with ribbed arms and applied filigree trails to both faces; inset possibly later cabochon garnet to the end of three arms and another in the central cell, and an integral suspension loop; some restoration.

    Acquired on the UK and EU art market before 2000. From the private collection of a Surrey, UK, gentleman.

    The plate and hoop of these rings were soldered together. This system probably originated only in the late period of the Eastern Roman Empire, as evidenced by the faceting of the sides and the irregularity in the letters forming the name.
