Large Anglo-Saxon Cruciform Brooch Section
CIRCA 6TH CENTURY A.D.
3 1/8 in. (54.3 grams, 81 mm).
Comprising the rectangular headplate from a cruciform brooch (Group IV(dii)) with raised central panel bearing horseshoe stamps on the lateral edges, trapezoidal wings and three integrally-cast waisted lugs each with a D-shaped panel to the outer edge; deep bow of curved section with central square-section knop and spandrels at each end; portion of footplate with lateral lappets each formed as a Style I profile bird-head; portion of catch to reverse and ferrous mass marking the remains of the iron pin. [No Reserve]

The 'spokes' and outer ring are formed in such a way as to suggest an array of birds' heads and beaks in a connected line, the cells with inset stones representing the eyes. -
