JAPANESE BANKO WARE PAINTED VESSEL WITH SILVER LID
MEIJI PERIOD, 1897-1911 A.D.
6 1/2 in. (190 grams, 16.7 cm).

Banko-ware jar with painted scene of birds among vegetation; silver lid with Birmingham hallmark (indistinct). [No Reserve]

PROVENANCE:
UK collection, 1990s.
Acquired on the UK art market, before 2000.
Private collection, Mr M.V., a London-based businessman.
This lot is accompanied by an illustrated lot declaration signed by the Head of the Antiquities Department, Dr Raffaele D'Amato.

FOOTNOTES:
日本万古 Which translates to: “Japan Banko” This is a reference to Banko ware (Banko-yaki / 萬古焼), a type of traditional Japanese stoneware that originated in the 18th century in Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture. It is especially known for its teapots, cooking vessels, and unglazed pottery. “日本” (Nihon) = Japan “万古” (Banko) = Banko ware, literally meaning “eternity” or “ten thousand ages”.
