8TH-9TH CENTURY AD
8 1/2" (820 grams, 22 cm).
A substantial iron helmet formed with a vertical band to the brow, with two flat bands across the skull and triangular plates behind; the bands with domed rivets in pairs across the skull, single around the brim; several additional rivets and rivet-holes to the rim for attachment of liner and cheek-plates; the band slightly ovoid in plan; the rim of the brow-band rolled.
PROVENANCE:
From an old European collection.
FOOTNOTES:
The helmet is similar in manufacture to the examples from Bremen (Germany) and Groningen (Netherlands) but lacks the prominent rivets usual for that type.
