Iron Age Celtic Limestone Head

2ND CENTURY B.C.-1ST CENTURY A.D. OR LATER

8 in. (4.6 kg, 20 cm).

Carved in the round with low-relief almond-shaped eyes and scaphoid nose, mounting ledge to rear. [No Reserve]

Provenance

From a collection acquired on the UK art market from various auction houses and collections mostly before 2000.
From an important Cambridgeshire estate; thence by descent.

    Comprising a tapering cylindrical shank with horse-head finial, mane extending to the rear, vertical slot; collar to the base developing to a bull's head with curved horns, ring-and-dot eyes; mounted on a custom-made stand. 9.42 grams, 33 mm (18.1 grams total, 62 mm including stand)
