The biconvex obsidian cabochon with intaglio profile female bust of a matron with neatly dressed hair; accompanied by a museum-quality impression. [No Reserve]

Provenance

Ex property of a Richmond gentleman; part of his family collection formed before 1980; thence by descent.

    Comprising glazed and unglazed vessels, figures and tiles, including examples decorated with figural, geometric, floral and heraldic designs (Beauvais Sgraffito), together with a fire brick displaying a Pelican in Her Piety design. 7.7 kg total, 3.8-43 cm



    Acquired 1990s-early 2000s. East Anglian private collection.

    In medieval Southampton the various forms of pottery included cooking pots with the beaded rim and opposing pair of handles, as it was probably also the specimen presented in this ensemble. Beauvais earthenware is a smooth, fine white fabric with some fine quartz grains. Vessels have a rich lustrous lead glaze and floral designs.
