A restrung bone bead necklace composed of oblate beads, interspersed with small brass beads, two large tubular and small annular beads above; large leaf-shaped pendant with hatched line and ring-and-dot decoration. [No Reserve]

Mughal Stone Openwork Arch with Birds

with a London, UK gallery 1971-early 2000s. This lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by search certificate number no.202355.
The motif of two birds flanking a plant on which they stand is well-known from Late Antique and Byzantine art, although the central stem is usually a cross or christogram in such cases e.g. on the left side of the sarcophagus of St. Savino, Fusignano, Italy. Islamic art generally does not favour the inclusion of naturalistic representations of living beings. -

Globular-bodied with broad shoulder and neck and everted rim, the upper body decorated in relief with rosettes, phytomorphic and ropework bands, frieze presenting a dynamic procession of bare-breasted women wearing extravagant earrings, neck ornament, arm and leg bangles and translucent lungis revealing their genitalia, a number of them holding staffs or weapons and wearing headdresses or holding vessels on their heads, flower-heads in the field; chipped. 400 grams, 16 cm high
