Hoi An Cargo Shipwreck Glazed Green and White Bowl

With wide shallow foot and everted rim, painted dots to the centre and beneath the rim with crescents around the foot. [No Reserve]

In the mid 15th century a freighting junk loaded with fine Vietnamese pottery sank in an area of the South China Sea called the 'Dragon’s Embrace.' This vessel is part of the shipwreck cargo recovered off the coast of Vietnam at Hoi An. The ceramics themselves were probably made in the area of Chu Dau.

Carved in the depicting a robed traveller on a donkey; the figure wearing an ankle-length robe and faceted cap, the arms bent and hands pierced to accept reins (now absent); gesso to the surface and remains of red, white and other pigment; hair applied to form the tail; underside with old Cotteril collector's label '2641.160.99 / China / Ming Dynasty / 1550-1600'. 703 grams, 29.7 cm
