GREEK HELLENISTIC GOLD AND GARNET ZOOMORPHIC TORC TERMINAL
3RD-2ND CENTURY BC
4 1/4" (35 grams, 10 cm).

A fine gold terminal, originally attached to a torc, the repoussé head fashioned as a dragonesque creature with long, trailing ears, possibly the mythical sea-monster Ketos; the mouth open with teeth bared, a hole drilled between the front teeth, garnet inlays to the eyes, a lozengiform granulated motif between the ears; the body slightly bulbous with a band enclosing quatrefoil shapes in gold granulation; above, a pattern of stylised scales, outlined in similar granulation; with a tubular section for attachment, decorated with two detailed horizontal band of lozenges within granulated borders, top and bottom, to the central section, four vertical sections outlined in granulation, enclosing patterns of 'S' shapes.

PROVENANCE:
From an important Mayfair, London, UK collection, acquired 1991; formerly in an Israeli private collection.
