Hellenistic Decorated Silver Bowl

CIRCA 3RD-2ND CENTURY B.C.

7 1/4 in. (222 grams, 18.5 cm wide).

With everted flaring rim, the exterior plain, the interior with ridged band at the shoulder composed of alternating X-motifs, stylised opposing plants, and dots interspersed with transverse bands.

Provenance

From a late Japanese specialist collector, 1970-2000s.

Footnotes

Similar segment-shaped silver bowls with partial gilding, decorated on the inside with friezes in the form of garlands or wickerwork, have been found in many nomad mounds in the Caucasus region. Treister attributes them to Parthian workshops. Such cups could also be undecorated or decorated only with a frieze of Ionian cymatium along the edge.

    The bell-shaped bowl with everted flaring rim, raised from a single sheet with parcel-gilding; the inner rim with raised wreath ornament, a band of geometric motifs below; central band composed of an elaborate garland of leaves and flowers flanked by bands of volutes; the base with an eight-petalled flower with radiating large leaves; small repair. 246 grams, 20.2 wide (1.58 kg total, 28.5 x 28 cm including case)



    From the collection of George Ortiz (1927-2013). with Mansour Gallery, early 2000s. Subsequently in a French collection. Accompanied by an academic report by Dr Raffaele D’Amato. This lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by search certificate number no.11936-210132.

They are attributed to Parthian workshops by Pfrommer and M. Treister.

    With a piriform body and narrow foot, deep shoulder and flange rim, strap handle to the rear; the rim and shoulder with radiating strokes, concentric bands to the body and foot, frieze of stylised running hounds below the shoulder. 34 grams, 63 mm high



    Acquired 1980-1990s. From the private collection of H.N., Milton Keynes, Bedfordshire, UK.

    Proto-Corinthian aryballoi of the same type, probably of Etruscan manufacture, in buff-ware decorated with dark metallic, purple-maroon and red-brown bands have been found in the Veii excavations. John Boardman noted that the shape in Corinth barely survives the 7th century, but these small pots are still found in Etruscan graves of the first half, or at least the first quarter, of the 6th century B.C.
