Literature

Cf. Chadour, A.B., Rings. The Alice and Louis Koch Collection, volume I, Leeds, 1994, item 487; Baldini Lippolis, I., L'Oreficeria nell'Impero di Costantinopoli tra IV e VII secolo (the Jewellery in the Empire of Constantinople between the IV and VII centuries, in Italian), Bari, 1999, pp.199ff, for the type, especially no.20, from Athens, Benaki Museum.

Footnotes

The ring belongs to the category of Eastern Roman rings with an applied bezel, a type particularly common between the 6th and 8th centuries AD. Similar to a ring held at the Benaki Museum in Athens, this ring bears the monogram ΙΩΑΝΟΥ (of Iohannes), likely belonging to the Consul of the same name—a high-ranking Imperial official active during the 6th and 7th centuries.
