Hadrian AV Aureus AD 121-123. Rome mint.

IMP CAESAR TRAIAN HADRIANVS AVG, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust to right / P M TR P COS III, Roma seated left on cuirass, holding Victory and spear; shield at side, bow and quiver with arrows behind. RIC II.3 538; BMCRE 133; Calicó 1334. NGC AU Strike: 5/5 Surface 4/5; an outstanding example, certification number 6944543-001.3 3/8 in. (49.56 grams total, 86 mm including case.).

    Acquired on the European coin market. Property of a Kent, UK, gentleman.

    The issue is, on account of the mintmark, occasionally described as having been struck at Constantinople for use at Cherson. However, the crude fabric and unconventional style as well as major inconsistencies in the epigraphy point to local production at the important port city of Cherson.
