Greek Terracotta Mask of a Satyr

6TH-5TH CENTURY B.C.

2 5/8 in. (80 grams total, 66 mm high including stand).

A terracotta head of a satyr (probably Silenus) with furrowed brow, prominent moustache and crescent beard; traces of pigment to the surface; mounted on a custom-made display stand.

    A pair of spherical gold beads with filigree ornament: both with gold wire to the equator with granulated triangles above and below, one with scrolled S-motifs in each hemisphere and granules around each mouth; the other with striptwist V-motifs with coiled arms in each hemisphere and striptwist collars to both mouths; both hollow-formed. 3.16 grams total, 11 mm each

    In antiquity, matrices for raising jewellery elements, ornaments and plaques were made of bronze, stone or reinforced terracotta. Matrices with designs in relief were used as an alternative to matrices with hollow designs or intaglio matrices.
