Greek Style Terracotta Oinochoe
20TH CENTURY A.D.
16 1/8 in. (1.36 kg, 41 cm).
With tiered foot, ovoid body, tapering neck and scooped trefoil mouth; tall strap handle to the rear with median gusset; painted palmette below the handle and combat scene with two hoplites and an attacking lion; after the antique.

In antiquity the phallic upper part would normally have have been covered by a separate bell-shaped casting of a grotesque figure wearing a waist-length hooded cape, probably inside a Gallo-Roman bronze statuette of the fertility god Priapus. -
