GREEK RED-FIGURE BELL KRATER WITH LADIES OF FASHION
APULIAN, 4TH CENTURY BC
12 3/4" (3.4 kg, 32 cm).

A red-figure ceramic bell krater of Magna Graecian workmanship, with pedestal base, bell-shaped body and broad everted rim; the rim with red rings to the interior and a band of stylised olive leaves to the underside of the exterior; the body with the head of a lady of fashion to one side; her face with elegant, well-proportioned features; her hair dressed in a decorated sakkos with stephane at the hairline; a lock of hair framing the face; a round gold-coloured earring with pendant detail; two strings of beads to the neck; flanked by palmettes and a rosette with white slip highlights; to the other side a similar lady, flanked by palmettes without a rosette; a continuous band of black wave patterning below; the base with a red band to the exterior; two loop handles.

UK art market, acquired prior to 1985.
