Greek Corinthian Aryballos with Winged Deity and Swan
7TH-6TH CENTURY B.C.
5 3/4 in. (180 grams, 14.7 cm).
Piriform in shape with flattened bottom and rosette; the neck narrow with wide flat rim, pierced lug handle; the body with lively decoration featuring a central winged harpy with head in profile, body turned to the right and wings spread, rosettes in the field, all painted in a dark brown and purplish brown slip with sgraffito highlights; reverse with standing swan with sgraffito detailing.

Terracotta figurines of horse and rider were common grave offerings in Boeotia, northwest of Attica, particularly during the 6th century B.C. Representations of warriors on horseback were already widespread in the Geometric Period, and widely used in Cyprus, during this period. -

The fragments of Daunian ceramics presented here seem to belong both to the first vascular group of this type of ceramic, the most numerous, that of Herdonia, either to that of Canosa, which forms the second vascular group of Daunian ceramics. In the first group the two-tone decoration is limited to thin elements in red, interspersed with the rest of the decoration in a blackish-brown colour, consisting of minute and dense geometric motifs. The Canosa vases are instead generally monochrome, not lacking the sober use of red lines, having as a central motif a pendulous quadrangular panel, with three free sides of the decorative frame. -
