Greek Carved Holy Bread Stamp with Saint Basil
LATE 19TH CENTURY A.D.
6 1/4 in. (141 grams, 15.7 cm).
Plano-convex in profile with square handle to underside; incuse figure of nimbate St. Basil facing, holding a book with dentilled border and legend 'ΟΑΓΙΟΣ ΒΑΣΙΛΕΙΟΣ' (Saint Basil); handle with legend 'ΙΣΧΣ ΝΙΚΑ' (Jesus Christ triumphant).

The image refers to the 'Miracle of the healing of the Priest' in which a priest, who had grown old in the service of the Virgin Mary, fell over in the church when bowing before her, and broke his back. The Virgin appeared and healed his broken bones. -
