A ceramic Apulian pelike vessel with two open handles, a narrow neck, a flanged mouth, and a sagging, almost spherical belly; neck decorated with running border of ovules with white dots below; one side painted with standing kore, wearing long robes and hair tied in a bun with a head scarf, large offering platter in one hand, staff in the other with leaves and berries to the top, flower patterns to the background; to the other face a seated naked Eros (Cupid), hair in a bun and tied with a cloth, arm outstretched and holding a rectangular object with X-shape to the middle, flower patterns to the background; scrolled acanthus leaves below the handles separating both scenes; running border of wave pattern to the base.
PROVENANCE:
Property of North London collector; acquired from Parthenon Gallery, London, UK, in 2006 (accompanied by a copy of the original invoice); formerly part of an old English collection formed in the 1970s.
